Field Trip Summary: The Legislative Building
(Fraser)
Site Information:
The Saskatchewan Legislative Building is a great place to discover more about our provincial government as well as the history of our province. Guided tours are offered on the hour and every half hour. School tours include a walk around the inside of the legislative building, a meeting with your local MLA and an opportunity to sit in on a session of the legislative assembly.
Cost:
None
Grade Level:
Preferably middle to older years as the information presented can possibly be too much for younger ages. It is ideal for the Grade 4 curriculum which deals with the provincial government, but the Legislature has hosted tours from Grade 3 classes as well.
Tips:
1) Plan for a field trip that could possibly last the majority of the day, depending on what you wish to cover with your class. Factoring in time to discuss and walk around the outside of the Legislative Building as well as lunch (depending on when the legislative assembly is in session) and the tour itself are things to be considered.
2) Make sure to know who your local MLA is before you go on the trip and to let the tour director know this as it will be the MLA who will meet with the children during the tour and introduce them during the legislative assembly session.
3) The children are given the option of eating lunch with the MLA, but also consider the possibility of eating in Wascana Park, weather permitting.
4) Make to plan this trip well in advance in order to contact the Legislature about the tour so that they can check the schedule of your local MLA.
