There is no cost to go to the Siast Dental Clinic for a field trip. It is advised that you book about a week in advance just to make sure that someone will be there to conduct the field trip.

General Summary: This field trip is designed for children ages 3 to about 7 or 8. Any higher and it may be too basic for them. Upon arrival the students would be taken to one of the classrooms where they would review healthy snacks and healthy eating. Next on the agenda would be a discussion on the proper ways to brush and floss your teeth. There are two short videos that would be shown pertaining to brushing and flossing, and they are animated so that it is appropriate for the ages of the students. The next topic to discuss would be nutrition and caring for your teeth. This would go a little more in depth than just the regular brushing and flossing. For students who are younger, for example pre-school or kindergarten students, this step would be skipped because it may be a little too complicated for them. Next would come the tour of the clinic. This is where the students are taken to the X-ray room and are introduced to X-rays. They get the chance to put on the lead vest and look at an actual X-ray. They get to sit in the X-ray chair and talk about why X-rays are taken. Following that the students get to “take a ride” in the dental chair. This gets them comfortable with the chair and how it works. They get to have it move up and down and lay down in the chair. This is all to prepare them for what it would be like when they really come in to visit the dentist to get their teeth checked. They also have a chance to have their teeth counted and see what that would be like, since that is something that really happens when they see the dentist. The whole tour takes about an hour to and hour and a half.

Curriculum Connections: For the social studies curriculum in module one called “Me” students will understand that people have similarities and differences, and they can compare and describe individuals. Students will learn to appreciate themselves and others and recognize that they are individuals and they are special and unique. From this topic students will also talk about needs and wants, focusing on their dental needs. Students will identify needs for healthy teeth, and describe how some of their needs can be met within their family.

This topic obviously relates to the health curriculum as well, and covers some of the health objectives. For example, grade one in the healthy body strand talks about choosing health snacks. That strand also includes disease and health, and even though I didn’t do a lesson on diseases you could easily incorporate that into a dental health unit. Some of the objectives within the health curriculum that relate to my topic are: make choices about food based on the needs of their bodies, establish daily habits for caring for their bodies in order to maintain or improve health and prevent illnesses, and demonstrate respect for the needs of their body.

Helpful Hint: SIAST is the only place (that I found, and I tried many!) that will take field trips, regular dentist offices do not!
