The museum is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., seven days a week, June - August. The museum’s approximate 15 000 piece collection is housed in the main buildings and several outbuildings. Displays and exhibits include:
  • Sod house
  • Log house (mudded and originally located on Cowessess First Nation)
  • CPR station and caboose
  • Blacksmith’s shop
  • Country school (fully restored)
  • General store
  • Creamery (the second in the North West Territories before the province of Saskatchewan was formed)
  • Post office
  • First Nations (unique artifacts and tipi display)
  • Military (features Canada’s World War I mascot, a goat, Sergeant Bill)
  • Tools, carriages, and machinery
  • Local clubs and organizations (Hospital, Homemakers, Sports, 4-H, Churches, School Districts)
  • Period rooms (kitchen, bedroom, dining room, nursery)

Educational programs and tours are offered for kindergarten through grade twelve. Most of the educational programs are adapted for different grade levels but some specific programming exists for the very young or the senior students. Some of the programming was developed with input from Broadview school teachers on curriculum learning objectives.

In a fully restored country school house, museum staff step into the role of a country school teacher. Students experience age appropriate activities such as hauling in wood for the fire, inspections of hand and fingernail cleanliness, and arithmetic questions with a chalk and slate. No school experience is complete without recess games such as three-legged races or an old fashioned ball game.

One of the most educational and enjoyable activities is the museum’s scavenger hunt. Staff/leaders are given answer keys and clue sheets to assist students. Students generally go in groups of two or three and search out answers throughout the museum and grounds. Answers are not always obvious. Students need to read and use critical thinking skills.

In teams, students’ race by performing chores such as (simulated) cow-milking, hauling and filling water buckets, washing clothes on a scrub board, and hanging clothes on the line. Supposedly, the Old-Fashioned Chore Relay Race is a favourite among student visitors.

Demonstrations are given by museum volunteers and then middle or high school students, get to try their hand at rope-making, blacksmithing and spinning wool.

The Broadview Museum is wheelchair accessible. There are washroom facilities on site. Blankets are available for an old-fashioned picnic. If weather proves to be a problem, there are indoor games and activities pre-planned in place of the outdoor activities. A fridge and microwave are on the premises. Barbeques are accessible if needed. The museum supplies a snack and drink during a tour. Museum staff is very accommodating and will design the tour to fit the needs of the class or school visiting. A host of volunteers can be drawn upon for extra supervision and support if requested.
