Teaching Strategy___Interactive/Directive_______
Learning Objectives:

Ø Students will recognize the different reasons we need teeth.

Ø Students will know that all people have similarities and differences.

Assessment:

Anecdotal Records

Observation: Teeth Sharing of two students at a time through out the week.
Common Essential Learnings (CEL’s):

Personal and Social Skills and Values – group discussion
Independent Learning – creating teeth model

Equipment/materials:

Egg cartons, cut into quarters length wise.

Paint brushes (dollar store)
Teeth model (Qu’Appelle Health District 1080 Winnipeg Street, 766-6320)

Advanced preparation:
Have egg cartons collected and cut into quarters length wise.
Have a jug with some water for toothbrushes to soak in for cleaning.
Have paint dispensed on egg carton quarter for students use.

Presentation
Set: (_10 min)

Have students come to the back of the room to sit in their circle area. Sit with teeth model for everyone to see.

Ask students why they think we need teeth?
Possible answers: to eat, to smile
“We also need teeth to pronounce words and talk as well.”
Ask students to pronounce the words ‘teeth’ and ‘tooth’ without letting their tongue touch their teeth.
“What about the word ‘smile’? Are there any other words we can think of that might be hard to say without our teeth?”
Now ask the students what they had for breakfast?
Would we be able to eat these foods without teeth?
Now ask if any of the student’s have a baby brother or sister in the family? OR to think about when they were a baby.
What type of food do babies eat? Why? (because they cannot chew it)
As we grow older we grow more teeth, which help us to what?? Talk, eat, and smile.
Point to model – We have three different types of teeth in our mouth. Incisors, canines, and molars.
Our front teeth are called incisors; they are different from our back teeth, how?
Why? – We use them for biting.
What do you think we use our bottom teeth for? – munching/chewing
These teeth (point to canines) they are different from our incisors, our front teeth. Can you tell me how? They are not as square as these front teeth are they? What do you think they are used for? - tearing. They are pointed and help to tear our food.
Here are our molars, they are different from our incisors and our canines. What do you think we use our molars for? - crunching

Development: (15 min)

Now students will make their own teeth to use through out the unit. We will use these teeth to practice brushing and flossing during the week ahead.

Show students the model already made, and give instructions. Students will use paint brushes (I supply from the dollar store) to paint the egg cartons. This will represent their teeth for the week.
Remind students that they are to be careful with the paint. We don’t want a huge mess; we want to respect our classroom and our desks.
Tell students that the first thing they need to do when they get their teeth is to put their name on the inside of it with a marker.

Inform students that I will also be going around taking a picture of each of their smiles for a different project in the week.
“I will come to you, one at a time, at your desks.”

I will ask for helpers to hand out teeth (egg cartons cut in ¼), paint brushes and paint (already dispensed on a different portion of the used egg cartons).

Rhythmic clapping.

Give me five!

Ensure all students are listening before explaining the task.

Closure: (5 min)

As time comes to an end, give students a warning that it is time to clean up.
Tell students that they are to clean up their space as they finish painting. The paint cartons can go in the garbage, the paint brushes can be put in a big jug (I will bring) which has water in it for cleaning at the back table in the room.

The teeth will go on top of the shelf at the back of the room to dry.

Review with students what we learned teeth are needed for. Some students may be still cleaning up at this point.

Eating, smiling, and talking.

Ensure all students are ready and have them all stand to say this poem.

End with this Poem (on poster board):

My front teeth are for biting. (biting motion)
Repeat for students to chime in.
My bottom teeth are for munching. (munching motion)
Repeat for students to chime in.
My pointed teeth are for tearing. (tearing motion)
Repeat for students to chime in.
My back teeth are for crunching. (crunching motion)
Repeat for students to chime in.

Extensions: Students could count out the number of teeth in their mouth using their tongue, a partner or a mirror.

Adaptive Dimension: Offer more time for students to paint, as well for any re-teaching of topic. Offer a centre activity where students can count out the number of teeth using dried out marshmallows and a worksheet.
