Presentation
Set: (_12 min)

Gather students at the back circle area.
Introduce what a cavity and gingivitis is.

Tooth decay is a hole in the tooth or a cavity.
Cavity – a late stage of dental infection that causes the tooth enamel to loose minerals.
Gingivitis – when the gums of our mouth around our teeth are swollen. The swelling is because of plaque that has built up. If we don’t brush properly this will cause our gums to be sensitive, red, swollen and bleed when we brush our teeth.
Germs – there are good germs and bad germs, and if we don’t brush our teeth properly bad germs will grow in our mouths. This can make us sick, and give us cavities or gingivitis.

Introduce flossing
We have talked about brushing our teeth but now I want to just talk about flossing our teeth. How many often are you suppose to brush your teeth? – once a day

Do you know how to floss your teeth? Can someone explain it to me?

Ensure all students are listening before explaining the task.

Extensions: Allow each student to practice their flossing skills on their models, or the tooth model from the health district.

Adaptive Dimension: Ensure there is plenty of time for slower students to complete the work. IF there is enough time for both worksheets, do them, or have students who are done quicker finish other work, read or explore their flossing skills in the centre area.
